Meetings were bad back then.
by Rattigan350 inmeetings have always been bad.. if paul had to "command" people to not forsake the gatherings, the meetings must have been really bad.. considering that jesus said in matt 18:20 "for where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there i am in their midst.”".
and then in matt 11:28-30: "come to me, all you who are toiling and loaded down, and i will refresh you.
take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for i am mild-temperedi and lowly in heart, and you will find refreshment for yourselves.

1974 and all that

i came across this footage recently whilst searching for something completely unrelated and it blew me away!.
it's from the august 1974 convention at murrayfield, edinburgh and you can clearly see the stage set up still keeping the 6000 years and 1975 mantra going.. what makes this very personal for me is that i was here.

As I recall, they were still teaching the chronology that 6000 years of man's existence, that is from the creation of Adam, was to end in 1975. The gentile times would end and usher in the next 1000 years (hence the '7000' on the platform) would be the Millenial reign.
That is true except they taught, and still teach that the Gentile Times ended in 1914 CE. That's 2,520 years from 607 BCE.
They now call the Creative Days "thousands of years" each rather than 7,000 years as they did.
I wonder how long they can hang on to this twaddle. You will not find many people who believe humans have been on the earth for just over 6,000 years.

I have watched many of his videos over the years (tothe field) and found them "enjoyable". The quality is not great even though they were filmed on 16mm colour film, very expensive in the 60's and 70's.
That particular convention, or assembly as we called them, at Murrayfield brings back memories. I was there with my wife, we stayed at the Pollock Halls, halls of residence for University of Edinburgh students. Easy drive along Princes Street to the stadium each morning.
I am older than you and your mother so share the feelings of wasted years, although in my case it could have been worse. So many of my peers of the day have long since gone. I often say to my wife that it's not so bad for "worldly" people. From the day they are born they know they are going to get old and die. We, as JW's were brainwashed into thinking we would never get old, or even go to school in this old system.

Chelmsford Dedication
by Teddnzo inzoe has nephew in the new bethel and we have been there to visit him.
even had a meal in the new dinning room and had a tour.. it was a bit underwhelming and the display of old bibles open to pages showing jehovah’s name is supposed to prove everything they say is spot on!.
everyone is talking about the upcoming dedication where members of the gb are flying over.

For anyone interested in this topic, the Consolation magazine of May 27, 1942 that was mentioned above is well worth a read. Rutherford wanted to be buried at Beth Sarim and when that was not allowed by the local authorities, Beth Shan. There are of course many places here where he could have been buried.
Who actually knows where he ended up? Several sources suggest beneath the garage at Beth Sarim or somewhere on Beth Shan, it ran to several acres. The cellar under the goat barn was not found until many years later and is currently an underground 'den' beneath a property built in the 1950's. Plenty of links and photos to that on this site.

Do you play the LOTTERY?
by Fisherman injw view gambling as a sin and sadly people get addicted to gambling causing them financial and health problems.
but is playing a couple of bucks a week on some lottery tickets actually gambling?
what do you have to lose?

I have never bought a lottery ticket or a raffle ticket. However, I do have Premium Bonds and it used to be said that a JW should not buy these as it is gambling with the interest.
I have received far more in winnings than if I had put that money in the bank. The winnings are also tax free which can be handy depending on your level of taxable interest. (UK)

So, 60 Years Ago
by titch inso, folks, 60 years ago, starting on september 1st, i believe, we, local witnesses in southern california, had the "privilege" of attending the "around the world assembly", at, of all places, the rose bowl, in pasadena.
(i think that it was an 8-day assembly) i was 9 years old then, almost ready to start 4th grade.
so, was anyone else, on this site, at that assembly?

they released a thick edition of the New World Translation
Generally known as the "Jumbo Bible" or "Fat Boy Bible"
It was basically all the 5 volumes of the NWT of the Hebrew Scriptures that had been released over the years, plus the NWT of the Greek Scriptures in one volume. i still have mine.
